How far I'll go?

🇮🇹 Quanto lontano andrò? 🌍🌎"Volevamo incontrare persone che fossero cresciute sulle isole, volevamo ascoltare e imparare ciò che rende le culture delle isole del Pacifico così straordinarie". Queste le parole di Ron Clements, regista del film animato "Oceania". La storia si ispira in gran parte ai racconti della tradizione orale dei popoli e delle culture dell’Oceania che narrano come tremila anni fa i viaggiatori polinesiani fossero tra i più grandi navigatori al mondo e attraversassero in lungo e largo lo sconfinato Oceano Pacifico alla scoperta delle numerose isole dell’Oceania. Successivamente però, secondo gli studiosi, per un millennio circa i loro viaggi cessarono, e nessuno sa esattamente il perché. Molte le teorie, ma nessuna certezza su cosa potrebbe aver causato l’interruzione di questi viaggi per 1000 anni. Ed è proprio questo che ha stimolato la fantasia dei registi Ron Clements e John Musker nella creazione di Oceania. “La nostra speranza come filmmakers era quella di creare una storia universale che rendesse anche omaggio alle bellissime popolazioni delle isole del Pacifico, che ci hanno ispirato in questa avventura.” dice la produttrice Osnat Shurer. Ispirarsi a dipinti e racconti sul Pacifico della loro gioventù non era abbastanza, per immergersi al meglio nelle incredibili storie della mitologia polinesiana hanno capito che sarebbero dovuti andare molto più a fondo, così Clements e Musker, insieme a un gruppo di artisti di Disney Animation, si sono messi in viaggio verso il sud della regione oceanica per ben due volte, recandosi prima a Fiji, Samoa e Tahiti e poi in Nuova Zelanda. Hanno potuto sperimentare la navigazione a bordo di un camakau, imbarcazione a vela tradizionale locale che è stata riprodotta poi nel cartone animato Disney, e visitando il Museo di Fiji hanno potuto vedere un camakau vecchio di 2.000 anni, che hanno notato essere cambiato davvero poco nel corso di tutti questi anni. Sì sono poi ispirati al Parco Nazionale delle Dune di Sabbia di Sigatoka, alle distese di lava nera a Samoa, ai capi villaggio locali, agli incontri con tatuatori e pescatori esperti, ai geyser di Alofaaga, alla cerimonia tradizionale di kava dell'isola di Manono, all'esperienza in canoa passando accanto alle grandi onde di Teahupo‘o a Tahiti, ai sapori della cucina locale e a tutte le generose persone che hanno incontrato. In seguito, insieme al trio che ha realizzato le musiche: Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina e Opetaia Foa‘i, hanno partecipato al Pasifika Festival di Auckland, in Nuova Zelanda. “Il festival è stata una splendida opportunità per assistere alla gioia e alla grande varietà di musiche e danze che caratterizzano le numerose culture delle isole del Pacifico” danze e musiche riprodotte dai personaggi del film. Anche la spettacolare ambientazione è frutto di una minuziosa ricerca sul luogo. “Abbiamo sviluppato un mondo che è una leggera caricatura della versione delle isole del Pacifico in cui abbiamo viaggiato”, afferma Musker, “I colori, già molto ricchi, risultano ancora più intensi. Vogliamo che l’aspetto di questo film risulti così avvolgente che allo spettatore venga voglia di tuffarcisi dentro.” e sono riusciti a pieno nel loro intento. Nel film compaiono più di 60 specie vegetali, comprese alcune varietà che gli antichi polinesiani potrebbero aver portato con sé dalle loro isole natie, come alcune particolari palme da cocco, l’albero del pane e il taro. I registi hanno usato delle licenze artistiche in alcuni casi, aggiungendo al paesaggio colori che sarebbero comparsi sull’isola solo molti anni dopo. Anche per quanto riguarda la scelta dei personaggi l’ispirazione è venuta dalle persone che hanno incontrato durante i loro viaggi nelle isole del Pacifico. Tra i tanti incontri che hanno fatto, uno è rimasto loro particolarmente impresso, ricorda Clemets. “Un anziano sull’isola di Mo‘orea ci ha chiesto una cosa così semplice e allo stesso tempo così significativa: ‘Per anni siamo stati travolti dalla vostra cultura’ ha detto. ‘Questa volta potreste farvi travolgere voi dalla nostra?’”.🌍🌎 💙 È proprio per questo motivo, che registi e produttori hanno ricercato, con i loro casting, tra le giovani promesse, una protagonista che avesse origini dalle Isole del Pacifico. Dopo aver provinato un centinaio di donne per il ruolo di Moana, la protagonista del film, quando ormai le audizioni sembravano chiuse, si è presentata questa giovane di 14 anni, Auliʻi Cravalho, nata a Kohala (Hawaii), con origini hawaiane, portoricane, irlandesi, portoghesi e cinesi. Viveva a Mililani con sua madre, Puanani Cravalho e frequentava il primo anno al campus Kapama di Kamehameha. La ragazza non aveva mai avuto intenzione di fare il provino per Oceania perché "c'erano già così tante ottime candidature su YouTube". Tuttavia, un talent scout di Oahu la scoprì durante una gara di beneficenza e la incoraggiò a fare un'audizione per il ruolo. E fu proprio lei, invece, con immensa sorpresa e commozione, anche delle cara mamma, ad essere scelta! A lei è dedicata la settima sfida di Covet Fashion in onore del patrimonio AAPI, sfida che ha un nome emblematico, "Quanto andrà lontano", che è la traduzione in italiano del titolo americano, "How far I'll go", della canzone principale cantata da Vaiana/Moana, la protagonista, reso nella versione italiana con "Oltre l'orizzonte". A cantarla in italiano è Chiara Grispo. Emanuela Ionica è invece la doppiatrice di Vaiana nelle parti non cantate e Fabrizio Vidale (noto per essere il doppiatore ufficiale di Jack Black) doppia il coprotagonista Maui. Ad Auliʻi Cravalho spetterà anche il primo doppiaggio in lingua hawaiana di un film Disney, rilasciato il 10 giugno 2018, sempre nel ruolo di Vaiana. 💙 Tra i suoi film come interprete, ricordiamo: All Together Now (2020), Ralph Spacca Internet (2018), Tra le sue serie tv come interprete, ricordiamo: Rise (2018). Anche il nome della protagonista è stato cambiato, da Moana a Vaiana. Vaiana, in tahitiano, significa "acqua di grotta".Ora, è del tutto verosimile che Disney Italia abbia preso questa decisione per evitare inopportuni paragoni con la celebre pornodiva italiana (Moana Pozzi). Tuttavia il cambio di titolo e nome della protagonista non è una peculiarità italiana, infatti anche in Spagna e in Francia né il film né la protagonista si chiamano Moana: in Francia il titolo del film è "La Princesse du Bout du Monde" e la protagonista è Vaiana, mentre in Spagna si intitola semplicemente "Vaiana". In entrambi i casi la scelta non è dovuta a nessuna pornostar, ma solo al fatto che, come ha spiegato Disney Spagna, in Francia, in Spagna e in altri paesi il nome “Moana” è un marchio già registrato da altre società e quindi inutilizzabile. Disney Spagna e Disney Italia non hanno spiegato se “Moana” è un marchio registrato anche in Italia. 👉🏼 Alle musiche hanno lavorato Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i e Mark Mancina. Il primo è un eclettico artista che è evidentemente piaciuto ai vertici Disney, infatti ha partecipato come compositore speciale in Star Wars – Il risveglio della forza. Opetaia Foa’i invece è un musicista polinesiano leader della band Te Vaka, composta da musicisti e danzatori provenienti tutti da quell’area del Pacifico. Infine, Mancina è noto per aver lavorato alla colonna sonora de Il re leone. 👉🏼 Uno dei protagonisti del film è Maui, un semidio che Vaiana incontra durante il suo viaggio e che la accompagnerà nella sua avventura. Ebbene, questo personaggio è ispirato ad un vero semidio polinesiano: fa parte dei Kupua, una specie di pantheon. Figlio di Akalana e di Hina, una delle leggende legate al suo mito è piuttosto curiosa: si narra che mentre il semidio era a pesca, si attaccò al suo amo qualcosa che sembrava una grossissima preda. Non riuscendo a tirarla fuori si fece aiutare dai fratelli ed emersero le intere isole Hawaii, le quali quindi secondo questa leggenda sono state create proprio da Maui. 👉🏼 In molti film della Disney compaiono delle citazioni ad altri film della stessa casa di produzione, i cosiddetti Easter Egg. E Oceania non sarà da meno. Olaf e il suo naso compaiono mentre Vaiana fa il fagotto per partire per il suo viaggio; Flounder, il grande amico di Ariel, compare a sorpresa in qualche fotogramma, secondo quanto dichiarato dai registi; tra uno schieramento di pirati uno di loro ha al posto della maschera degli altri la faccia di Baymax, il robot infermiere di Big Hero 6. And it is precisely this that stimulated the imagination of directors Ron Clements and John Musker in the creation of Oceania. "Our hope as filmmakers was to create a universal story that also pays homage to the beautiful peoples of the Pacific islands, who inspired us in this adventure." says producer Osnat Shurer. Inspired by paintings and tales about the Pacific of their youth was not enough, to better immerse themselves in the incredible stories of Polynesian mythology they realized that they would have to go much deeper, so Clements and Musker, together with a group of artists from Disney Animation, they traveled to the south of the ocean region twice, first going to Fiji, Samoa and Tahiti and then to New Zealand. They were able to experience navigation aboard a camakau, a traditional local sailing boat that was later reproduced in the Disney cartoon, and visiting the Fiji Museum they were able to see a 2,000-year-old camakau, which they noticed very little changed over the years. They were then inspired by the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park, the black lava expanses in Samoa, the local village chiefs, the encounters with expert tattoo artists and fishermen, the Alofaaga geysers, the traditional kava ceremony of the island of Manono, the canoe experience passing by the great waves of Teahupo'oa Tahiti, the flavors of the local cuisine and all the generous people they met. Later, together with the trio that made the music: Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa‘i, they participated in the Pasifika Festival in Auckland, New Zealand. The directors used artistic licenses in some cases, adding colors to the landscape that would only appear on the island many years later. Also with regard to the choice of characters, the inspiration came from the people they met during their travels to the Pacific islands. Among the many encounters they had, one was particularly impressed by them, Clemets remembers. "An elder on the island of Mo‘orea asked us something so simple and at the same time so significant: 'For years we have been overwhelmed by your culture,' he said. 'Could you be overwhelmed by ours this time?' ". 🌎🌍 💙 It is precisely for this reason that directors and producers have sought, with their castings, among the young promises, a protagonist who had origins from the Pacific Islands. After auditioning a hundred women for the role of Moana, the protagonist of the film, when the auditions seemed closed by now, this 14-year-old young woman, Auliʻi Cravalho, born in Kohala (Hawaii), with Hawaiian, Puerto Rican origins, presented herself, Irish, Portuguese and Chinese, she lived in Mililani with her mother, Puanani Cravalho and attended the first year at the Kapama campus in Kamehameha.
