Quando nasci e cresci nella Grande Mela hai solo due opzioni: o ti mimetizzi nel grigio dell’asfalto, dello smog e dei grattacieli o te ne freghi e decidi di vivere la tua vita a colori. E lei, la sua vita, la sta vivendo in technicolor. Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta nasce a New York, il 28 marzo 1986 da Joe e Cynthia Germanotta. Nelle vene le scorre sangue siciliano e non perde mai l’occasione di ribadire quanto sia felice di essere di origine italiana. Cresce nell’Upper West Side, come tutti i newyorkesi benestanti. La madre, amante della musica, trasmette questa passione alla figlia, che già da piccola mostra un talento incredibile: a quattro anni si destreggia al piano e le sue abilità canore sono incredibili. Oltre che dalla famiglia, anche la scuola impartisce alla piccola Stefani un’educazione cattolica rigida. Dedita allo studio, disciplinata ma insicura, è così che l’hanno descritta le suore del Convento del Sacro Cuore (scuola frequentata anche dalle sorelle Hilton e utilizzata nella serie Gossip Girl). Al liceo cerca di combattere contro la timidezza, le paure e l’ansia, partecipando a vari musical scolastici, ma un’altra insidia si nascondeva tra gli armadietti ed i corridoi: i bulli. Per anni è stata presa di mira per il suo aspetto, per la sua fragilità, per i sogni fatti di musica e palcoscenici. Oltre a tormentarla durante le ore di lezione, alcuni compagni di classe, l’hanno umiliata creando un gruppo su Facebook chiamato: ‘’Stefani Germanotta non sarai mai famosa’’. Nello stesso periodo è vittima di abuso sessuale, segreto che custodirà per moltissimi anni, combattendo da sola contro attacchi di panico e traumi. Ma l’amore per la musica l’ha sempre fatta andare avanti. Finito il liceo abbandona il nido e prende in affitto una stanza nel Lower East Side, ed è proprio lì che muove i primi passi nel mondo della musica. Inizia ad esibirsi in bar burlesque, accanto a stripper e drag queen, provocando molto imbarazzo ai genitori. Si iscrive al college, ma lo lascia poco dopo per dedicarsi completamente alla musica, affiancata dalla Stefani Germanotta Band. Qualche serata, svariati applausi e poi le luci dei bar si spengono e, con loro, i sogni di musica si affievoliscono ogni notte un po’ di più. Dopo un’esibizione, una sera, viene avvicinata dall’assistente di un produttore che vede in lei una luce tale da illuminare tutte le case del Village. Qualche giorno dopo viene convocata nell’ufficio del produttore. Iniziano a discutere di musica, progetti futuri, carriera, copertine e festival. Lui prometteva i primi posti nelle classifiche americane, lei ascoltava incredula e con gli occhi sbarrati. Innanzitutto, il nome non era accattivante, perciò andava cambiato. Stefani, per omaggiare uno dei suoi più grandi amore, i Queen, decide di dedicare loro il suo nome d’arte. Stefani scompare. Lady GaGa emette il primo respiro. La sua carriera inizia dietro le quinte. Subito le viene riconosciuto un talento incredibile come paroliera, per cui la Interscope Records, le affida il compito di scrivere canzoni per Britney Spears, Fergie, Pussycat Dolls e molti altri. Nel 2008 propone alla casa discografica di essere la voce di uno dei suoi pezzi. Si presenta con una demo di Just Dance, convincendoli. Il singolo viene inciso e pubblicato, ma solo l’anno dopo raggiungerà le classifiche in ben sette paesi ed aggiudicandosi la quarta posizione degli album più venduti dell’anno. Ad oggi, Just Dance, detiene ancora il record di ‘’Singolo di debutto più venduto di sempre’’. Cavalcando l’onda di questo incredibile ed inaspettato successo, nel 2009, la Interscope pubblica il secondo singolo di Lady Gaga: Poker Face. A differenza di Just Dance, il successo di Poker Face è immediato, scavalca confini, vola nei cieli di tutto il mondo, attraversa gli oceani e rimbalza di casa in locale, di discoteca in radio. Trentasei dischi di platino, disco di diamante negli Usa, singolo più venduto al mondo del 2009. Come se non bastasse, vincitore del World Music Award (miglior singolo) e di un Grammy (miglior pezzo dance). Ma non è ancora abbastanza per la Interscope. Qualche mese dopo, ‘’Paparazzi’’ scala le classifiche ed è protagonista di diverse teorie complottistiche. Accusata di far parte della più famosa e potente setta massonica, gli Illuminati, a causa di una serie di immagini e simboli inseriti nel video di Paparazzi. Ovviamente, le etichette, dopo tutto questo clamore, iniziarono ad inserire quanti più messaggi subliminali e simbolismi nei video delle popstar, così da ricavarne quanta più pubblicità possibile. Secondo i complottisti, il video di Paparazzi, rappresenta l’uccisione spirituale di Stefani a favore di Lady Gaga. Le polemiche si intensificano dopo l’esibizione agli MTV Music Awards, dove Gaga inscena un suicidio in cambio della fama. Ad Agosto del 2009 viene pubblicato il primo album, ‘’The fame’’, che per 150 settimane consecutive resta nella Billboard 200. 15 milioni di copie vendute, settantacinque dischi di platino, dodici dischi d’oro, due di diamante. Un Brit Award, un World Music Award ed un Grammy. Dopo mesi di silenzio, è la volta di Bad Romance, il singolo che la consacra ufficialmente come nuova regina del pop. Bad Romance supera il miliardo di visualizzazioni su YouTube e consegna a Gaga ben 10 delle statuine più importanti nell’industria musicale. Oltre la musica, anche le sue lotte la rendono famosa. Da sempre si schiera a favore dei diritti omosessuali, dei quali è una delle madrine più esposte. Inoltre, lotta anche contro gli abusi sessuali ed il bullismo, temi che ha conosciuto sulla propria pelle. Nel 2010 fanno scalpore il suo abito di carne e il video di Alejandro, nel quale Gaga veste gli abiti di una suora e mette un rosario in bocca. Il video viene censurato in diversi paesi e la Lega Cattolica lo ritiene blasfemo. Il video ha chiari riferimenti alla Seconda guerra mondiale e allo sterminio degli omosessuali. Gaga ormai ha tenuto fede alla promessa che aveva fatto ad un suo ex fidanzato che non la riteneva abbastanza brava da poter avere successo, che non vedeva per lei una carriera nel mondo della musica, che sosteneva non avrebbe mai vinto nulla. ‘’Un giorno, quando non saremo più insieme, non riuscirai neanche ad ordinare un caffè senza vedermi o sentirmi’’. Colpito e affondato. Negli anni Gaga ha continuato a sfornare capolavori, da Born This Way a Joanne, da Artpop a Chromatica. Nel 2019 recita al fianco di Bradley Cooper nel film A Star is Born, nei panni di Ally, giovane cantautrice che si esibisce nei locali accanto alle drag queen e, grazie ad un incontro fortunato, si ritrova nelle classifiche mondiali.
