Uno dei ritornelli più famosi della musica afferma che le ragazze vogliono solo divertirsi, ed è esattamente quello che faremo adesso. E lo faremo insieme all’autrice di questo iconico, eterno e sacro mantra: la regina vestita di tulle e adornata con mille perle dai colori sgargianti, fiera esponente di collant dai colori improponibili, colei cha crede nelle permanenti e nei tutù. Sua Maestà, Cyndi Lauper. Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper nasce a New York, esattamente nel Queens, il 22 Giugno del 1953. Nelle sue vene scorre sangue europeo, il padre ha origini tedesche e la madre, invece, ha origini italiane. A dodici anni compone le prime canzoni e inizia a strimpellare la chitarra. Lascia la scuola durante gli anni delle superiori e, con lo zaino in spalla, parte alla volta del Nord America. Nel 1978 abbandona il Canada per ritornare a casa. Lì, nella Grande Mela, mette su una band, i Blue Angel, con i quali riesce a pubblicare il primo album. Per loro, però, non ci sono migliaia di ragazzi urlanti accalcati sotto il palco, ma solo qualche avventore nei club più pidocchiosi di New York. Nel 1980, nel silenzio e nell’indifferenza più totale, i Blue Angel si sciolgono. Cyndi ama troppo la musica per rinunciare, così continua ad esibirsi nei locali newyorkesi, ma senza risultati. Si mantiene facendo la commessa di giorno, ma la notte esistono solo lei, la chitarra, una luce al neon quasi fulminata e gli ubriaconi stanchi, poveri e col cuore spezzato nelle bettole di periferia. Proprio lì, nel 1981, viene notata da David Wolff, un manager musicale che riesce a strappare un contratto alla Portrait Record (sottoetichetta della Columbia). Nel 1983 viene pubblicato il primo album, She’s so Unusual, che è un miscuglio di vari generi; pop, rock, new wave, dance e qualcosina di punk. Il singolo che viene scelto per promuovere l’album è una di quelle canzoni che ogni umano, in qualunque parte del mondo, per un motivo o per un altro, ha ascoltato, canticchiato e ballato: Girls Just Want To Have Fun. Un vero e proprio inno. Il singolo fa il giro del mondo, entra nelle orecchie di tutti e scala le classifiche internazionali, segnando la nascita di una stella. L’album contiene anche Time After Time, ballad dai toni decisamente differenti dal primo singolo, ma capace di raggiungere le classifiche di mezzo mondo. Time After Time, dal 1983 ad oggi è stata riproposta sotto forma di cover da oltre 70 artisti differenti. Nel 1985 entra a far parte del progetto USA (United Support Artist) for Africa ed, insieme a Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen e molti altri, incide We Are The World. Il singolo raccoglie oltre 100 milioni di dollari, devoluti interamente alla popolazione etiope, vittima di gravissime carestie. Qualche mese dopo si aggiudica il primo Grammy (Miglior Artista Emergente) e recita sul grande schermo (ma solo per pochi istanti) nel film The Goonies. Il 1986 è l’anno di True Colors, album che mostra una crescita personale ed artistica della Lauper. L’album, oltre il meraviglioso singolo da cui prende il nome, contiene anche Boy Blue, canzone scritta in onore di un suo amico morto di HIV. Anche in questo caso, i fondi raccolti dalla vendita del brano vengono devoluti per la ricerca contro l’Aids. Nel 1990 dopo due album e un film che non hanno raccolto consensi, la Lauper incanta Berlino con una magnifica interpretazione di Another Brick in The Wall, nel megagoncerto The Wall. Bisogna aspettare però il 2000 per ritrovare la Lauper di nuovo nelle classifiche mondiali, grazie ad At Last, album di cover anni Quaranta/Cinquanta/Sessanta, grazie al quale viene nominata ai Grammy. È vero che le ragazze vogliono solo divertirsi, ma questa particolare ragazza, tra una hit e l’altra, ha sempre avuto il coraggio di dare voce a chi una voce non ce l’ha. Ad oggi, oltre a sostenere ancora le associazioni che si occupano della ricerca contro l’AIDS, è una delle madrine più feroci ed agguerrite della comunità LGBT.
