Robyn Rihanna Fenty nasce il 20 febbraio del 1988 a Bridgetown, capitale dell’isola Barbados, da Ronald e Monica, rispettivamente supervisore di un magazzino di vestiti e contabile. Sorella maggiore di Rorrey e Rajad. La sua infanzia è segnata da forti conflitti familiari, dovuti soprattutto alla dipendenza di alcol e droga da parte del padre. Si chiude in se stessa, rifiutando qualsiasi tipo di sfogo. Niente lacrime, niente urla. Solo parole soffocate in gola, chiuse a doppia mandata nella testa. A otto anni inizia a soffrire di emicrania cronica, problema che si risolverà solo molti anni dopo, sei precisamente, in seguito al divorzio dei genitori. Seppure silenziosi, i suoi dolori, hanno bisogno di essere scaraventati fuori e, la piccola Robyn, decide di urlare, piangere, gioire ed imprecare in un modo tutto suo: attraverso l’arte. Inizia a rifugiarsi nella musica, prendendo a calci le sfortune a passi di danza e raccontando la sua tristezza ad una macchina da scrivere. A quindici anni, grazie all’appoggio di due amiche fidate, decide di mettere a tacere la sua timidezza, fondando su un trio musicale con il quale si esibirà in vari concorsi. Grazie a Mariah Carey e la sua Hero, perfettamente eseguita durante uno di questi concorsi, il trio riesce ad ottenere un provino con Evan Rogers, produttore musicale che si trovava sull’isola in vacanza.
Questa volta fu Emotion delle Destiny’s Child ad incantare Rogers.
Arrivarono in tre, ma fu solo una a passare le selezioni. Indovinate chi?!
All’età di sedici anni lascia Barbados e si trasferisce negli States, per essere seguita completamente dal produttore Evan Rogers. Robyn, la ragazzina caraibica timida, insicura e incapace di dar sfogo alle proprie emozioni resta lì sull’isola, insieme a vecchi dolori e vestiti ormai troppo stretti. Quella che scende dal taxi giallo, poggiando piede sul suolo a stelle e strisce è Rihanna. A New York inizia la lavorazione delle prime demo, tra le quali figura Pon De Replay.
Il disco viene inviato alla Def Jam di Jay-Z, il quale ci mette meno di dieci secondi a contattare Evan Rogers per fissare un’audizione con quella ragazza sconosciuta e talentuosa. Sbalorditi dall’energia, la forza ed il fuoco di questa teenager, Jay-Z, quella stessa notte, fa firmare a Rihanna un contratto con la Def Jam di sei anni.
Attenzione popstar di tutto il mondo, il diamante grezzo dei Caraibi sta per rubarvi la scena.
Pon De Repley viene rilasciata il 24 maggio del 2005 e, facendo timidamente capolino tra le hit di cantanti ben più noti, passando in radio in bassa rotazione. Ovviamente, una forza così inarrestabile non può essere fermata: a fine giugno, il singolo, occupa la seconda posizione delle classifiche americane. La Def Jam vuole pubblicare subito un secondo album, infatti ad un anno dall’esordio, A Girl Like Me, viene rilasciato. Il singolo promozionale dell’album è SOS, che fa volare Rihanna oltreoceano, imponendosi anche nelle classifiche europee.
Il 2007 è l’anno di Umbrella ed è qui che tutto cambia: il nome di Rihanna viene affiancato a quelli delle più grandi popstar del mondo.

Umbrella vende tantissimo, scala le classiche, in altissima rotazione sulle radio e su MTv.
Nel 2009, ormai conosciuta in tutto il mondo, Rihanna pubblica il nuovo album, Good Girl: Gone Bad, composto insieme ad un team stellare (Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, etc).
L’album si piazza subito dopo l’uscita al secondo posto, ma sarà la versione deluxe (Good Girl: Gone Bad: Reloaded) a garantire a Rihanna un successo clamoroso.
Ma all’orizzonte ci sono nuvole cariche di pioggia, tempestose e scure come la pece, pronte ad abbattersi su di lei. La notte dell’8 febbraio, Rihanna sta viaggiando nella limousine del fidanzato, Chris Brown. I due litigano, come una qualunque coppia di fidanzati, perché pare ci sia stato un tradimento nei confronti di Rihanna. Le voci si alzano, le parolacce riempiono l’abitacolo della limo e, purtroppo, gli effetti di alcol e droga assunti iniziano a farsi sentire. Chris alza le mani contro Rihanna, pestandola quasi a morte. Fortunatamente, riesce ad uscire viva da quella macchina.
Doversi proteggere da chi credevi ti avrebbe protetta, a vent’anni (ma anche a sessanta) fa un male cane. Per sette mesi Rihanna sparisce completamente: niente musica, niente tv, niente interviste. La prima apparizione sarà nel Tonight Show di Jay Leno, insieme a Jay-Z e Kanye West.
Intanto, Rihanna si lancia alla lavorazione del nuovo album, Rated R, album che avrà dentro tutto il dolore vissuto in quell’anno.
Nell’autunno del 2010, al termine del tour mondiale di Rated R, Rihanna si tinge i capelli di rosso e decidi di riappropriarsi dei suoi vent’anni e della sua spensieratezza. Nel frattempo, Love The Way You Lie (scritta e cantata insieme ad Eminem) scala classifiche e raggiunge vette incredibili.
Poco dopo esce Loud, altro successo clamoroso. Nel frattempo torna a collaborare con Kanye West e, insieme ai Coldplay, pubblica Princess of China.
Nel 2011, insieme a Calvin Harris, compone We Found Love, che si rivelerà essere uno dei più grandi esperimenti del decennio. Nel frattempo, grazie alla penna abile di Sia e la voce cristallina ma decisa di Rihanna, viene rilasciata Diamonds, singolo che porta per la prima volta la cantante al numero uno. Una volta terminato il tour, Rihanna decide di godersi la fama, la ricchezza e la popolarità da dietro le quinte, abbandonando la scena per qualche anno.
Ma ci lascia regalandoci un ultimo pezzo: The Monster. Il duo delle meraviglie, formato da Rihanna ed Eminem, torna di nuovo ai vertici delle classifiche internazionali. Del tutto a sorpresa, dopo due anni di silenzio, collabora insieme a Kanye West e Paul McCartney nel brano FourFiveSeconds. Nel 2015 collabora con Drake per il brano Work, contenuto nell’album ANTI, dove Rihanna sarà spesso autrice delle sue canzoni.

She is the older sister of Rorrey and Rajad. Her childhood was marked by strong family conflicts, mainly due to her father's addiction to alcohol and drugs. She withdraws into herself, refusing any kind of outburst. She no tears, no screams. Only words choked in her throat, she double-locked in her head. At the age of eight she begins to suffer from chronic migraines, a problem that will be solved only many years later, six to be precise, following the divorce of her parents. Although silent, her pains need to be thrown out of her and little Robyn decides to scream, cry, rejoice and curse in a way that is all her own: through art. She begins to take refuge in the music, kicking bad luck with dance steps and telling her sadness about her to a typewriter. At fifteen, thanks to the support of two trusted friends, she decides to silence her shyness, founding on a musical trio with which she will perform in various competitions. Thanks to Mariah Carey and her Hero, perfectly performed during one of these competitions, the trio manages to get an audition with Evan Rogers, a music producer who was on the island on vacation.

The record is sent to Jay-Z's Def Jam, who takes less than ten seconds to contact Evan Rogers to schedule an audition with that unknown and talented girl. Stunned by the energy, strength and fire of this teenager, Jay-Z gets Rihanna to sign a six-year contract with Def Jam that night.
